Example: Object 'Bergelmir' = IAU 'Saturn XXXVIII' = '638'. Five-digit numbers are assigned by JPL to objects that have no official IAU number yet. Source: JPL SSD ► https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sats/elem/sep.html (2) Based on mean orbital elements: 'Retrograde' and 'prograde' (or "direct"). The retrogradely orbiting moons are often called "Norse group". One object was found to share very similar orbital elements as Phoebe ('ret/Ph'). Most prograde moons ('pro') can be further subdivided into 'Gallic' (i ~ 38°; very high eccentricities) and 'Inuit' (i ~ 49°) moons. The Inuits form three more subgroups: Kiviuq family ('In/Kiv') (these are the Irregulars closest to Saturn), Siarnaq family ('In/Sia'), and standalone object Paaliaq. (3) All a,e,i values are mean orbital elements, i.e., the elements of a precessing ellipse which has been fit in a least-squares sense to the numerically integrated orbit which covers a time span of a few thousand years. Epoch is 2000-01-01.5 TDB for Phoebe (mean orbital elements referred to the local Laplace planes) and 2000-01-01.5 TDB for all others (mean eclipic orbital elements). (4) P_syn = 1 / (1/P_sid ± 1/P_Saturn) ['-' for prograde, '+' for retrograde moons; P_Saturn = 10759.22 d] (5) Source: Natural Satellites Ephemeris Service of the MPC ► https://www.minorplanetcenter.net/iau/NatSats/NaturalSatellites.html (6) The absolute magnitude H is the magnitude (brightness) of an object if located 1 au away from the Sun and observed at 0° Solar phase angle (i.e., in this definition, the observer virtually sits at the center of the sun). (7) The magnitude scale is logarithmic, with (for example) an object of 26th mag appearing 100x darker than a 21st mag object. (8) For objects announced before 2023: From Jacobson+ (2022, AJ, Table 5, column 'Mag (R)'). For the YofA=2023 objects: From S. Sheppard's website ► https://sites.google.com/carnegiescience.edu/sheppard/moons/saturnmoons (9) Diameters are calculated as follows from absolute magnitude H with an assumed albedo A = 0.06: D = 1au·(2/√A)·10^[-0.2·(H-M☉)]. 1au = 149597870.7 km; M☉ = -26.71 mag (apparent V magnitude of the Sun). Exception is Phoebe, with value taken from Denk+ 2018 UofA Enceladus book. For Siarnaq and Albiorix, see also Grav+ (2015, ApJ). (10) Note that the object size uncertainty is quite large because H is not very accurate, and the chosen albedo value (0.06) is just a little bit more than intelligent guessing. In reality, objects might be more than ~50% larger or more than ~30% smaller than noted. Given are two digits for each object although this does not reflect the actual accuracy in most cases. (11) From Denk&Mottola (2019, Icarus). Lightcurve amplitudes are a first-order indicator of an object's deviation from a circular equatorial cross-section, with 0 → circular (flat lightcurve), >0 → elongated (size of visible cross-section varies; the larger the value, the more elongated the object). Caveat: The surface itself should be uniform, i.e. should not contain bright spots or so. I think this is the case for the Irregulars. Exception is Phoebe which is known to have lightcurves being dominated by albedo features. The observation phase angle is given because it strongly influences the lightcurve amplitude. Displayed here are the Cassini observations at lowest phase for each object. (12) Ymir, Tarvos, Siarnaq, Bestla: From Denk+ (2018, UofA Enceladus book, Table 3). Phoebe: From Gomes-Junior+ (2020, MNRAS). All others: From Denk&Mottola (2019, Icarus, Table 3). (13) Left column ('GB'): From Grav&Bauer (2007, Icarus). Right column ('GJ'): From Graykowski&Jewitt (2018, AJ). • YofA=2021 (1) and 2023 (16) objects: Measurements (in MPECs) only reported in data over three years from 2019, 2020 (except 19S14), and 2021, but not from 2004-2007; this means that their orbital elements are less certain. •• YofA=2023 (5) objects: Measurements (in MPECs) only reported over two years in data from 2019 and 2020.
